Greenwood: Electoral Reform ‘Will Be a Fight’

Championed by three of four national political parties – and by extension almost eleven million voters – electoral reform will prove to be one of the first challenges for the newly elected Liberal government.

Though electoral reform was a part of their platform, the Liberals never explained how they would reform the system says the Green Party candidate for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo, Matt Greenwood.

There are better and worse options says Greenwood who feels that the fight for a better electoral system is just as important as the election itself

“I’m going to see what I can do to get involved with Fair Vote Canada – and I’d encourage everyone to do the same, because that’s where the next fight is going to be. In some ways, the fight of what kind of electoral reform system we’re going to get is, in some ways, even more important than the one we just went through.”

The New Democrats and Greens are both in favour of proportional representation, whereas the Liberals have toyed with the idea of Alternative Vote or even Single Transferable as the next step in scrapping the current First-Past-the-Post system.
