Iconic Williams Lake Building Sold By Longtime Service Club

One of the oldest buildings in Williams Lake has been sold.

After serving the community for 68 years the Elks Hall has a new owner.

President of the Cariboo Elks Lodge #239 Randy Schellenberg said COVID-19 has really hurt the organization and that they finally found a buyer after trying to sell it in the past.

“With Covid, it’s really kicked our behinds and we have sold the building.” Schellenberg said, “It will no longer be a hall it is going to be boarded up. It’s a landmark, it really hurts us to let it go like this but it’s time, we just can’t do it anymore with no members.”

Schellenberg said in the past the Elks Lodge room used to hold 130 members and it was jammed packed all the time but now they’re down to six members.

“We are going to get a club going and we’re going to do a membership drive. I think we have Elktober coming up here pretty quick so we’re going to push for that and see what we can do to get some new members and new life into the Elks Club of Williams Lake”, Schellenberg added.

The first hall was built in 1948 and burnt down in January 1949.

A new hall replaced that the following winter.
