This afternoon Premier Christy Clark publicly congratulated the new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on his election win, taking time to thank Stephen Harper and all the outgoing MP’s for their service.
Clark had a strong working relationship with Harper and says she expects BC will continue to be respected in Ottawa.
“Canada needs us, we are the only province in Canada that is poised to lead in economic growth this coming year. We are the only place in the country that’s creating jobs at the rate that we are. We are a safe harbor in a very stormy economic front across the country.”
Clark says she will use that increased influence to push for a new softwood lumber agreement, calling the issue “absolutely urgent”.
But Clark says she sees eye to eye with Trudeau on a pillar of his party’s platform.
“I believe in infrastructure spending as a way to create jobs and a way to create economic growth… and I know that Prime Minister Trudeau agrees with me and I think that’s something we will be able to work together productively.”
The Premier also shot down rumors suggesting she runs for the leadership of the federal Conservative party saying she respects national politicians but she’s “got a big job here in BC.”
