Tory Candidate, City Councilor Feud Over Facebook Post

The Conservative candidate for the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo riding is taking exception to a social media posting from a member of Kamloops City Council.

Councilor Donovan Cavers says he doesn’t support the “Nudes for votes” campaign, but that it generates discussion as to how far some people are willing to go for political change

I’m critical of that. I think it’s a pretty bizarre way of getting your point across. I wasn’t endorsing it or posting the direct link for people to go and participate in this website in any way.

Tory candidate Cathy McLeod doesn’t accept that explanation and says that anything being shared on Facebook is an implicit endorsement of that content:

Anyone that’s on Facebook knows that when you’re sharing something – you can *say* that you don’t endorse it but what you *are* doing is promoting it and you’re promoting something that is very degrading and very inappropriate and I don’t accept that (explanation).

McLeod is adamant that it is unacceptable for someone in Cavers position to share that kind of content:

I think this crosses a line. As a woman, I think its absolutely degrading and I’m very disappointed that *anyone* would share that site, but especially someone in a position of trust within local government.

Cavers, for his point, doesn’t feel like its personal but instead part of some shrew campaigning on McLeod’s part:

My take on that is that it’s a pretty smart campaign move – she’s just trying to distract people. There are plenty of issues that she could and should be talking about in this last week of the election – rather than putting stuff like this out to – in my opinion – distract from real issues like the 1,200 missing and murdered indigenous women.

The issue of women’s rights will likely continue to factor leading into the federal election this coming Monday (October 19th).
