100 Mile House Deals With Increase in Bear “Leavings”

Does a bear do its business in the woods?

Not always, as the residents of 100 Mile House can attest as bear “leavings” can be found around the town.

It’s important to be “bear aware” says Mayor Mitch Campsall who admits there will always be some conflicts due to geographical realities:

“We’re trying to do everything we can but if people won’t look after their garbage – we can’t force them to. But we help make them bear aware and hopefully that will mean less incidents with bear… but we *do* live in the wilderness.

The Mayor was quick to point out that the district will be dealing with any “scat” left in public spaces:

If its in a public area – like a sidewalk or a playground – the staff will deal with it, but if it’s on someone’s lawn – yeah, we won’t be touching it.

The number of reported bear incidents this past August and September more than quadrupled the area’s 2014 numbers.
