Williams Lake and Alexis Creek RCMP are warning the public about a telemarketing scam in which the caller pretends to be a representative from School District 27.
Constable Shane Nicoll says a local business received a fraudulent call all the way from Newfoundland.
“The person that called requested that the business purchase advertising space in a school’s magazine that they developed. The businessman then called the school to confirm these details and was warned that no such magazine existed,” he says.
“His head’s up sense prevented fraud from happening.”
RCMP say no matter how credible the caller may be to never divulge personal or financial information over the phone.
Anyone with further information is asked to contact RCMP or Crimestoppers.
