NDP LABOUR CRITIC BLASTS ‘PALTRY’ MINIMUM WAGE BUMP

The BC NDP is blasting what they are calling a paltry bump in the minimum wage.

Labour Critic Shane Simpson says today’s new $10.45 an hour wage floor is nowhere near the poverty line.

“The working poor in the province are in a pretty desperate situation, generally struggling to make ends meet, and the government really hasn’t stepped up all with 20 cents.”

Simpson says he doesn’t buy the argument that small business can’t afford a larger jump, pointing to increases in the past that didn’t rock the boat.

New legislation from the BC Liberals now pins the minimum wage to inflation.

“At some point, the minimum wage has to get to 15 dollars an hour, under the Liberals plan I think it gets there in 2034… that’s too long, we obviously have to get there a heck of a lot quicker than that.”
