Campfires still banned west of the Fraser River

The Cariboo Fire Centre is reminding individuals that campfires still remain banned west of the Fraser River.

Fire Information Officer, Emily Epp says although there has been some cooler and wet weather, the weather conditions will not be favorable for long.

“We are seeing in the forecast that over through the Labour Day weekend, things will start to warm up again and we’re expecting it to dry out next week so at this the campfire ban will stay on west of the Fraser River through the Labour Day weekend.”

Epp says the area is one of the driest in the province.

Campfires no larger than 0.5 meters high by 0.5 meters wide are allowed east of the Fraser River.

She says crews, along with officers from the Conservation Services, will be patrolling to ensure that individuals are in compliance and reminds individuals lighting a campfire to have a shovel or at least 8 liters of water available nearby to properly extinguish it and to never leave it unattended.
