Cariboo unemployment rate up by 2% from last year

There were 9,000 fewer people working in the Cariboo region last month compared to a year ago.

That from Andrew Fields, a Labour Marker Analyst with Stats-Canada, who says the jobless rate was 7.8 percent last month, up significantly from the 5.7 percent that was recorded in August of 2014.

Fields says there were declines in several different sectors…

“The biggest declines were in educational services as well as other services which can be quite a few things; mechanics, landscapers, household repairs, and maintenance,” he says.

“We also see a decline in manufacturing and wholesale and retail trade.”

Fields says were slight increases meanwhile in public administration and construction.
