Removing Attractants Key to Avoiding Grizzly Encounters with Bears

Cariboo residents concerned with the seeming increase in bear sightings in and around homes have options available to them.

Conservation Officer Colin Krevonka gives some tips on how to limit the chances of having a wildlife encountered.

To avoid bears you should remove attractants. Pick your fruit, don’t leave it on the trees or on the ground. If you’re going to use it, keep it secure or donate it. You’ve gotta keep your garbage locked up or take it to the transfer site. Put it out like an hour before collection and occasionally bleach the container.

Krevonka says the bears are largely accessing natural foods but will seek out other sources should there be nearby attractants such as fruit trees, bird feeders or garbage.

Anyone with sightings, complaints or reports of poaching can call the Conservation Wrap Line at 1-877-952-7277
