Algae Bloom at Horse Lake – An Update

An algae bloom on Horse Lake-south east of 100 Mile House is continuing to be monitored.

Courtney Hesketh, Manager of Environmental Health for Interior Health says although no toxins have been detected they will be testing samples of the bloom into the fall.

“So Interior Health, as well as the Ministry of Environment, will be continuing to take a look at the algae bloom as it’s growing. We’ll do re-sampling to test for toxins.”

“The Ministry of Environment routinely tests lakes for nutrient levels so things like nitrogen and phosphorous that’s required for the algae to grow.”

Hesketh says residents living near the shores of the lake, as well as visitors to the area, remain advised to avoid contact with the bloom and not swim or wade in any areas where the algae is visible.

She adds that Interior Health also advises individuals to never drink or cook with untreated water directly from any recreational body of water, including Horse Lake, at any time.
