City Responds To Celebrate Life Controversy

The City of Williams Lake says it was never their intention to offer an opinion on the ongoing abortion debate or to endorse either side of the debate after controversy erupted surrounding its proclamation of Celebrate Life Week.

Local pro-choice activist Carrie Julius says she is pleased Council will explore developing a proclamation policy for all future requests.

“I’m happy to see that city council is making steps towards change and considering reviewing things in the future.”

The City adds although they will give serious consideration to the feedback they have received in going forward, they will not the rescind the proclamation that was meant to speak to the value of human life that is the result of each person’s uniqueness, not of what a person does or produces.

The proclamation was unanimously received by city Councillors on Sept. 16.

Celebrate Life Week runs in Williams lake until Oct. 5.
