Crime Severity Index Ranking: Williams Lake Climbs, Quesnel Slips

The Crime Severity numbers are out for another year and Stats-Canada has the Lake City as number one in Canada out of 303 policed communities of 10,000 people or more for violent crime.

That’s up from number 3.

Quesnel is number 9 for violent crime, which is an improvement over 4th place in 2013.

RCMP Sergeant Darren Dodge says despite the numbers, Quesnel is a very safe community to live in.

Looking at the overall crime severity index, Williams Lake is 2nd overall which is up from 4th while Quesnel has dropped down to number 9 there as well, from 4th.

Dodge says they are obviously happy that the numbers are trending in the right direction but he says they are not satisfied.

As for why there was a slight improvement in Quesnel, Dodge credits targeted law enforcement primarily against prolific offenders.

The Violent Crime Rank, as well as Overall Crime Severity Rank also slipped for these communities:

  • Prince George: 23 (last year 12)
  • Terrace: 17 (last year 8)
  • Prince Rupert: 12 (last year 13)
  • Ft. St. John: 19
  • Dawson Creek: 28 (last year 9)

On a provincial scale, Saskatchewan leads all provinces in both overall crime rate and crime severity.
