Wildfire Update: Friday, July 17

Progress continues to be made on two wildfires of note within the Cariboo Fire Centre.

Fire Information Officer Karen Powell says the Bald Mountain Fire, which is located 10 km South of Riske Creek, is now 65% contained.

“They’ve been able to do that using 50 firefighters, 10 support personnel, a helicopter, and 5 pieces of heavy equipment,” she said.

“Today crews will continue to reinforce the guard on the north flank of the fire and they will also continue their direct attack on the perimeter.”

Powell says smoke from the 655-hectare blaze may be highly visible from Highway 20.

She says there were three new fires all less than 1 hectare this last week in the Cariboo Fire Centre- two lightning-caused and one human-caused, and are being monitored by crews.

138 firefighters and 65 support personnel, meanwhile now have a wildfire north of Puntzi Lake 40% contained on the southwest flank.

Fire Information Officers Emily Epp and Jonathan Scott say burn-off operations yesterday were successful in achieving desired operational goals.

It’s still burning at an estimated 8,089 hectares.

BC Hydro is currently working to re-energize the lines to homes affected in the Evacuation Alert and Order areas.
