More crews to arrive to help fight Puntzi Lake wildfire

The Cariboo Fire Centre is making preparations as unfavorable weather conditions begin to roll in across the region.

Fire Information Officer Emily Epp, says more firefighters will be arriving to help the Puntzi Lake Wildfire which is now 40% contained on the southwest flank.

“In fact yesterday, Tuesday afternoon, smoke was visible as winds and lower temperatures and lower humidity increased fire behavior,” she said.

“As of today, the Puntzi Lake fire camp is expanding and we’re expecting 40 new firefighters tomorrow.”

Epp says the two new unit crews are the Stormriders based in 100 Mile House and the Blackwater Unit Crew from Quesnel who have previously been assigned to other incidents in the province.

There are currently 97 firefighters, 43 support personnel, 18 pieces of heavy equipment and four helicopters working on the 8,000 plus hectare blaze.
