Lightning strikes a record for May

Lightning struck a record across the province last month, according to Environment Canada.

Meteorologist Doug Lundquist, says last month had about 77,000 strikes across the province compared to the average of just 15,000.

“That of all the last, I think it ‘s 13 or 14 years, this is the highest ever for the month of May,” he said.

“It beats the previous record of 2005 by double-we had 36,000 that year.”

Lundquist says the increased lightning activity, which has ignited 27 fires within the Cariboo Fire Centre since April 1st, can be likely contributed to warmer than average temperatures.
