South Cariboo residents may see some smoke in the air over the next few months.
Jessia Mack, a Fire Information Officer with the BC Wildfire Service, says they are planning to conduct a series of controlled burns north of Horse Lake to reduce the wildfire risk around the Imperial Ranchettes neighbourhood and in the 100 Mile House Community Forest…
“We’re going to be conducting some pile burning of woody debris, and that’s going to be occurring at the end of Gary Road beginning today and continuing periodically until about June 30th.”
Mack says they will only proceed when weather conditions are favourable…
“So that will include the wind speed, the wind direction, venting and site conditions, and it will all be considered prior to ignition.”
Mack says this is part of an ongoing fuel management project under the direction of BC Wildfire Service…
“With the primary goal being to reduce wildfire risks through prescribed thinning or spacing of trees and the removal of surface fuels that could burn in the event of a wildfire.”
Mack says the piles will be burned in groups of two to four at a time and will be strategically placed to minimize the impacts on neighbouring trees.
