Tax Increase Coming For Quesnel Residents For 2019

Quesnel City Council has approved a preliminary operating budget that would see taxes go up by 4.9 percent in 2019.

Most of that increase, around 3.1 percent, is for the new public works facility that taxpayers gave the green light to in a referendum.

Director of Finance Kari Bolton goes over what this increase would mean for the average homeowner…

“A 4.9 percent tax increase would result in an increase to the average residence, valued at $200, 659 of $41.29 or approximately $20.58 per hundred thousand of assessment.”

Here, Bolton goes over the final steps to the budget process…

“We will be receiving the final assessments from BC Assessment, review options for the 2018 surplus, setting the tax rates, and finalizing the tax rate bylaw and the five year financial plan bylaw before the May 15th deadline.”

This year’s 4.9 percent increase would follow increases of 3.4 percent in 2018, 1.8 in 2017, 2.8 percent in both 2015 and 2016 and a 3.1 percent increase in 2014.
