Plans Laid Out For Indigenous Cultural Centre In Quesnel

The vision for a new Lhtako Dene Indigenous Cultural Centre was laid out at last night’s City Council meeting in Quesnel.

Alfred Waugh, with Formline Architecture, says the idea is to create a village on the confluence of the Quesnel and Fraser River.

Here he talks about what the 31,000 square foot space would include…

“So there is going to be two primary components, the theatre and the exhibit space, and then along with the cultural centre to draw revenue would be a gift shop and a cafe.”

The theatre would include 250 seats.

The project will also include a viewing platform.

The estimated cost is around 16 million dollars and a funding application, if successful, would cover 100 percent of the bill.

Construction could begin by the spring of 2020 and it would take between 14 and 16 months to complete.

The City has gifted the land, known as Ceal Tingley Park, to the Lhtako Dene Nation.

It is located on their traditional territory.
