Long weekend wildfire activity keeps crews busy

Wildfire Management Branch crews from the Cariboo Fire Centre responded to 9 new wildfires over the May long weekend, with fire suppression efforts also having continued on the Pelican Lake fire.

Fire Information Emily Epp says the largest lightning fire, which was extinguished by Monday afternoon, covered about 3 hectares west of Anahim Lake.

The 6 other lightning-caused fires were small and are all now out or in the patrol phase. Epp says crews had also responded to two human-caused wildfires; one near Highway 20 in the Chilcotin and the other northwest of Puntzi Lake. As of Monday, the Pelican Lake Fire was 100% contained and in the patrol stage.

The Wildfire Management Branch says although they are not expecting significant fire behavior this week in the Cariboo Fire Centre, crews will likely be kept busy extinguishing small fires that may flare up as temperatures rise.
