There’s serious trouble in the South Cariboo after 15 or 16 eagles were found in various stages of decomposition in a ditch near 70 Mile House earlier this month.
An investigation by conservation officers is ongoing and the remains have been sent to Abbottsford for examination.
Whoever killed the raptors could find themselves in legal hot water says conservation officer, Sergeant Len Butler, who explains the penalty for killing eagles.
“The fines for somebody doing this can be quite high, for first offences we’re looking at fines of 100,000 dollars, a year in prison, or both.”
Butler has a few theories as to the who possibly did the killing and why:
“I don’t think it’s someone going out there and doing joy shooting. Is there a possibility that a producer is having an issue with eagles? We don’t know right now, but once we get some of the forensics back it might start pointing fingers as to what’s going on.”
Forensic examination may not be enough as the conservation officers are asking the public’s assistance in this investigation.
