Special Prosecutor Appointed in Highway of Tears Email Scandal

A special prosecutor has been appointed to assist the RCMP in their investigation into the BC Liberal Highway of Tears email scandal.

Greg DelBigio will independently advise police while they investigate why a Ministry of Transportation staffer deleted email records on the Highway of Tears to prevent them from becoming public.

DelBigio will also conduct his own investigation before making a decision on whether criminal charges are needed. If that’s the case, he will conduct the prosecution.

The announcement comes off the heels of last month’s scathing report from the BC Privacy Commissioner on the government’s handling of Freedom of Information requests and the routine practice of “triple deleting” records.

That report also revealed that the staffer who deleted the emails, George Gretes, lied under oath while being questioned by the Commissioner. Gretes may face perjury charges and has since resigned.
