McLeod: “Senate reform very hard to implement, still part of the plan”

An uncomfortable spotlight has been fixed on the upper house of the Canadian legislature, as the trial of Mike Duffy continues in the Nation’s Capital

Senate reform has always been a goal says M-P Cathy McLeod but it would be a huge undertaking and require almost unanimous support from all branches of government

The federal government has been consistently frustrated by the Supreme Court’s inflexibility in allowing reform to the senate says McLeod

Abolishment of the Upper House, isn’t any easier says McLeod, who points out that such a significant change to the constitution would require unanimous consent from all provinces and both the House of Commons and Senate itself.

Nancy Greene Raine is an example of why abolishment may not be the right choice, says McLeod, who points to the hard work undertaken by the local Senator

Duffy, along with Patrick Brazeau, and Pamela Wallin have all been suspended since twenty-thirteen from their senate positions for their alleged misdeeds
