Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued for the Cariboo

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the Cariboo as wildfires sparked by lightning continue to keep the Cariboo Fire Centre busy.

Fire information officer Jessica Mack says since Tuesday they have had 13 wildfires.

“Four are considered ‘out of control’ and those ones being at Nazko Lake Park, Grain Creek, and two at Quesnel Lake,” she told MYCARIBOONOW Thursday morning.

“We have four that are ‘under control’ and those are in Tasse Lake, Lang Lake, Springhouse, and Horsefly, and one incident that is now ‘being held’.”

27 firefighters are currently on site of the Nazko Lake Park fire that grew to an estimated 46 hectares due to windy conditions, the fuel it’s located in, and the fire behavior that was experienced Wednesday.

“However we did have heavy equipment work throughout the night and they were able to wrap the entire fire with a guard,” said Mack.

Environment Canada says weather conditions today are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain, and have issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Cariboo including 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, and Quesnel.

“The fire danger rating for most of the Fire Centre is ‘high’ and then there are some pockets that are in ‘moderate’,” says Mack.
