Cariboo Resident Killed by Falling Tree While Hiking Popular Trail on Vancouver Island

A 57-year-old woman from the 150 Mile House was fatally struck by a falling tree while hiking a popular trail north of Campbell River.

RCMP responded to the incident Tuesday afternoon on the Ripple Rock Trail located 17 kilometers north of Campbell River

The woman who was hiking with her daughter was approximately three kilometers in on the four kilometers hike when a tree fell striking her.

Medical efforts by the daughter who is a nurse and another hiker who is an ex-military medic were not successful,” said RCMP in a news release.

“The force of the tree left no hope for survival.”

The mother and daughter were transported to Campbell River by Search and Rescue with the assistance of the Coast Guard.

“The Campbell River RCMP are very sorry for the loss of this mother and give their deepest condolences to her family,” said Cpl. Ron Vlooswyk.

The BC Coroners Service is leading the investigation.

(Editor’s Note: Campbell River RCMP indicated the woman was from Williams Lake. BC Coroners Service Manager of Strategic Communications Andy Watson confirmed however she is from 150 Mile House.)
