Tax Change Impact Minor

100 Mile House District council has no plans for a pay increase.

An upcoming change in tax law will remove a 1/3 exemption on the salary of an elected official. Mayor Mitch Campsall says that the council doesn’t make enough for the change to really affect them.

“We don’t make enough that its going to make a difference to our paycheques. It’s a minor amount. For us its just not worth going through the hassle of dealing with that. So far council seems to be happy with where we are.” Campsall says.

Several municipalities and the CRD are considering pay increases for elected officials to offset the change, which removes a 1/3 tax exemption on elected official salaries. The exemption was in lieu of paid expenses in the course of their duties.

Campsall says “It is disappointing that the federal government has done that, but it is what it is and we’ll just keep on going.”
