Heat wave to hit the region

Things are expected to heat up in the Cariboo.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says that a ridge of high air pressure is building across the Central Interior.

“By Monday close to 30 and continuing that way throughout the week and perhaps even beyond our forecast which goes out to Thursday. I’m sure there will be records set,” he says.

“We even have a new heat warning that we can put out depending on how hot it is. It’s based on statistics how it affects human health but it may be something you’ll see in the next week or two.”

Lundquist says although we have received close to half of the average 58 mm of precipitation for June, we are heading towards the possibility of being drier than average.

“We need the June rains to help protect us,” he says. “I know the folks in forest service are going to be concerned about this early heat and dryness-it’s going to dry the forests out really quickly.”

Lundquist suspects that warmer than average temperatures will continue for the remainder of June and into July and August.
