The emergency room closures in 100 Mile House have surpassed the total amount for all of 2025.
Interior Health announced two more closures for the Emergency Department (ED) at 100 Mile District General on Tuesday (July 28).
The ED will be closed Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
After these closures, the total number of ED closures at 100 Mile District General will be 34 times so far in 2026. In 2025, the ED was closed a total of 27 times.
During this time, patients in need of emergency care have to access it at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital in Williams Lake.
The Health Authority says all other inpatient services will continue at 100 Mile District General. It tells anyone in need of life-threatening care to call 911 to be transported to the nearest available and appropriate facility.
“Interior Health (IH) understands that interruptions to normal emergency department services in 100 Mile in the days ahead are concerning and frustrating for the community,” A spokesperson for Interior Health told Vista Radio in a statement via email.
“Current challenges relate to physician availability, and summer months can be particularly challenging as vacations and staffing pressures increase. Service interruptions remain a last resort, and IH is actively reviewing schedules and working to fill gaps wherever possible through locum [visiting] physicians.”
In its statement, Interior Health says that it will continue to work with BC Emergency Services and alternate hospitals to be able to provide people in the region with emergency care when there are service interruptions at local emergency departments. The Health Authority also says that they are adding additional physicians in 100 Mile House soon.
“Three more providers are expected to arrive in 2027 as part of the Practice Ready Assessment Program and are anticipated to be able to support emergency coverage,” IH said in its statement. “We will continue to keep the public updated on progress related to increasing community primary care availability and emergency department coverage in the months ahead.”
Interior Health says that it will continue to look for coverage for the shifts on July 29 and July 30 until the moment that of the closures. It says if coverage is secured, it will provide an update to the community immediately.
Any patient unsure whether or not a visit to the emergency department is warranted, or wants to know where they can access the care that they need, can call HealthLinkBC at 811, or visit its website and talk to a registered nurse or health care professional.
