Quesnel Fire Department respond to three-alarm fire at Quesnel River Pulp

The Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department (QVFD) was called out to an industrial fire early on Tuesday.

Fire Chief Ron Richert says QVFD was called to a chip pile fire at Millar Western Pulp Mill (also known as Quesnel River Pulp) at around 11:40 a.m.

“Upon arrival, we had a large section of the chip pile underneath the galley-way on fire,” says Richert. “We did also have a structural fire in the galley-way itself. Millar Western Staff was instrumental in knocking the fire down quickly. When we arrived, with the combined effort, we were able to knock the fire down and have it under control within the hour.”

Richert says there were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

However, the Fire Department believes the fire could have possibly been caused by a mechanical malfunction in the galley-way’s conveyor belt.

The fire was isolated, and Richert says the mill did not have to shut down operations.
