100 Mile House Police Sergeant says motorists are “lucky” to be walking away without any injuries from a three-vehicle accident in Lac La Hache on Monday.
Sergeant Brian Lamb says police and BC Emergency Health Services attended the scene of an accident in a construction zone on Highway 97 near Spring Lake Road, where traffic was stopped.
“A vehicle approaching the lineup of vehicles did not stop in time, which caused a rear-end collision into a stopped vehicle, which then pushed forward and rear-ended another stopped vehicle,” says Lamb.
“There were no injuries, and traffic was halted for a short period while the scene was cleared. The motorists are very lucky; even without knowing the exact speed of the initial vehicle, the severity of damage could have been much worse. Incidents like these on highways, even with a slow-moving vehicle, typically result in injuries.”
Lamb says police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.
“My understanding is that the driver was not aware that traffic was stopped, and it may have surprised him to see that. Police on scene do report that the driver attempted to stop, but unfortunately was unable to.”
Police caution motorists traveling along Highway 97 in the South Cariboo and Lac La Hache area that construction is still ongoing, which may cause motorists the need to suddenly stop, and traffic lineups may be long.
