Get active, reduce Greenhouse gas emissions and win prizes

Spring GoByBike Week is taking place across BC and Williams Lake is once again taking part.

Local Coordinator Ruth Lloyd said it started out as a bike to work week but it’s expanded broadly since then.

“It’s just a way to encourage people to get out and participate in active transportation by walking, biking, scooter trips, whatever mobility device they choose that helps them get outside and enjoy the joy of moving under your power. It’s also meant to show the desire for active transportation. People want to be able to do it. Sometimes it takes a little planning and sometimes they have to be strategic about how they’re going to do it because we don’t always have easy ways in our current systems.”

May 30 to June 5 during GoByBike Week every trip made by bike, foot or mobility device counts and can qualify participants to win prizes.

Provincial prizes for those who register are eligible to win one of two new e-bikes and other prizes.

In Williams Lake additional prizes are also available strictly for locals which includes a 1 night stay at Birch Bark Cabin in Beaver Valley, a new helmet, gift certificates and more.

We asked Lloyd how the interest in this event has been in participating in active transportation over the past few years.

“We’ve had really great turnouts in the past three Spring GoByBike. We had 132 in in 2023, 192 in 2024 and 155 registered in 2025. Collectively participants logged nearly 11,000 kilometres in active transportation trips over those years. Tons of kilograms of Greenhouse gas emissions have been potentially avoided due to that kind of transportation.”

Lloyd noted that not every trip is one that you would have driven for, some of it might recreational, but the one’s you replace a drive to the grocery store with a bike ride helps offset all those Greenhouse gases.

Participants can register for Spring GoByBike online at gobybikebc.ca and then can log their active travel trips either through that same website or by connecting their account to the Strava app.
