Road Safety at Work calling on drivers to slow down around roadside workers

As roadside work increases, Road Safety at Work is reminding drivers to stay alert to help protect workers.

This is part of the province-wide Roadside Safety Campaign to reduce common factors of distracted driving that put roadside workers at serious risk of being struck.

Spokesperson Trace Acres said speed should also be top of mind, as it protects workers and drivers.

“In many construction sites, there will be a specified construction speed limit, and drivers need to slow down to obey that speed limit.”

“They may be passing a roadside construction site where there’s a lot of moving equipment, where there might be soft shoulders or uneven pavement.”

Acres said when coming across flashing lights, drivers should move over and slow down to 70 kilometres an hour in 80 or higher zones, and down to 40 in zones under 80.

He added that over the last ten years, the province has had eleven roadside worker deaths, with 263 more sustaining injuries, noting that it shows how vulnerable those workers are.

Acres said it’s simple to give roadside workers the cooperation and protection while driving.
