South Cariboo community fundraiser set to begin June 13th

A community fundraising campaign is set to begin June 13th in the South Cariboo.

“Hearts for 100 Mile” was sparked by a local resident who wanted to give back to the community she loves.

“This was spearheaded by Wendy Hamlin that use to live outside our area of the boundary of the town,” District of 100 Mile House Mayor Maureen Pinkney said, “she worked in town, used a lot of the facilities in town, and thought back then that they should be contributing a little bit more to 100 Mile.”

Pinkney said Hamlin gave a presentation to council at the beginning of March that there probably other people like her out there.

“Now she actually lives within our community and she just thought that maybe there other people that would like a way to be able to contribute, in these tough times of the mill closure and the District of 100 Mile having to still maintain all it’s infrastructure. It was a very moving presentation where she definitely laid out a lot of the issues the town is going through right now and the inability for us to to really generate that lost taxation in any other reasonable way. We thought that was wonderful and said that we would help her out with it and so now we have Hearts for 100 Mile.”

The campaign will run from June 13 to September 31 and proceeds from this fundraising campaign will go toward infrastructure improvements and charitable receipts are available upon request.

“People will be able to basically pledge any amount of money. Donors can go into the District office and make their pledge. We will have hearts there that we can put their name on and have recognition or they can remain anonymous. We will have the unveiling of Hearts for 100 Mile House down at the park when we do our duck race,” Pinkney said.

Pinkney said 100 Mile House has always been a community built on true grit and heart.

“This campaign is a way for people who care about this town to show how strong communities are built together. Even small gestures can make a big difference when a community comes together and I thank Wendy for the initiative of spearheading this.”
