BC Wildfire Service crews are making progress on the Konni Lake wildfire 8 kilometres North East of the community of Xeni Gwet’in First Nation.
Fire Information Officer Amanda Cullum said there has been no significant growth since Friday (April 24) and is classified as being held.
“This was due to success in suppression efforts combined with cooler temperatures and decreased winds. With the resources assigned and the current conditions we do not expect this fire to grow beyond the predetermined boundary or perimeter.”
Cullum noted that due to a more accurate track of the Konni Lake wildfire it is now being listed at approximately 190 hectares.
“Ground crews have completed a 20 foot wet line around the perimeter of the fire and helicopter support continues with bucketing. Crews will continue mop up in the coming day.”
Cullum said after cooler temperatures today (April 28) it is forecasted over the over the next 7 days to expect above seasonal temperatures trending towards 28 to 30 degrees Celsius into early next week throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre.
“With increased temperatures we expect to see continued drying conditions. There is currently a Category 2 and 3 open burning prohibitions throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre. While campfires are still permitted we urge the public to use caution and follow all safety procedures.”
Cullum added conditions such as elevated wind, warming temperatures, extended drought conditions, and low relative humidity, may all contribute to higher risk of the spread of a wildfire.
