Wildfire smoke advisory in effect

A wildfire smoke advisory has been issued for Williams Lake and surrounding areas.

Sandra Wagner with the Cariboo Fire Centre says due to the numerous fires burning across BC, Alberta, and the Northern Territories smoke can be coming in from any number of fires.

Wagner adds that a fire of note was sparked over the weekend due to lightning.

“The Cariboo Fire Centre has responded to three fires over the weekend. One of them is a wildfire of note west of Mount Dent.”

Eleven firefighters are currently working to establish access to the remote blaze that is 250 hectares.

As for the fire west of Bull Canyon that is 940 hectares, Wagner says it is contained.

“It is 100 percent contained…Today ground personnel are on-site with the assistance of helicopters and continue with mop-up and patrol.”

The Ministry of Environment says that exposure to the smoke is of particular concern to infants, elderly, and anyone with underlying medical conditions.
