Unemployment Picture Pretty Good For The Cariboo Last Month

There was a fairly large drop in the Cariboo’s year over year unemployment rate last month.

Vincent Ferro is a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada…

“In February the region had an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent. That’s a decline of 2.4 percent compared with February of last year, when it was 9.7 percent.”

Ferro says the main reason for the drop was that fewer people were actually looking for work….

“What happened over the 12 month period of this last year, the number of people working remained about the same. We had 79,700 people working in February, compared with 79,500 a year ago. There were less people looking for work.”

Ferro says there were more people working in retail and wholesale trade, but fewer people working in some support services and educational services.

BC continues to have the lowest unemployment rate in the country at 4.7 percent, down from 5.1 a year ago.
