Oakes Goes On Attack In BC Legislature

Cariboo North Liberal MLA Coralee Oakes went after the NDP’s Finance Minister in the legislature yesterday, accusing Carole James of double dipping to raise an extra 1.8 billion dollars on the backs of family businesses.

Oakes used Loyd Inwood who owns Inwood Trucking as an example of the impact that might have.

She says he was looking to fill 4 or 5 positions in his company but, according to a letter sent to her office, those plans have now changed…

“It said that i am considering walking away from everything my family has built, over two generations. What does the minister have to say to the 30 employees and the families they represent who will lose their livelihoods.”

Oakes says businesses are going to not only have to pay the new Employer Health Tax, but will also have to pay MSP premiums in 2019 as it is being phased out.

For her part, Finance Minister Carol James insists that the elimination of MSP will not only save businesses when it comes to administration but when it comes to dollars as well.

She also says that they are lowering the small business tax rate from 2.5 to 2 percent…

“And in addition to having the second lowest small business tax rate in this country, we are supporting small businesses, if you have a payroll that is below 500 thousand in this province you will pay nothing when it comes to the employer’s health tax. If you have a payroll between 500 thousand and 1.5 million you will not pay the full rate in the employer’s health tax.”

Oakes says it is clear that this government does not understand small and medium sized businesses in British Columbia.
