New Telephone Scam in the Kamloops-Thomson-Cariboo region

A former One Hundred Mile House resident was the target of a new telephone scam earlier this morning.

An involved party and current resident of the South Cariboo, who prefers to remain anonymous, describes the would-be fraudsters – who claim to be from the C-R-A – as “very convincing”

Those e-filing their taxes should be aware that they could be more susceptible to this particular scam and that the C-R-A will never ask you for prepaid credit cards or threaten you.

The source warns that the scammers can be quite intimidating because of how comfortable they are in using tax terminology as well as suggesting that collection agents have already been utilized.

One other detail about this scam is that the call originates from a ‘202’ area code. This ‘202’ area code actually corresponds with Washington D.C. and would not have anything to do with the Canadian Revenue Agency.

If you suspect that you’ve been the target of a fraud attempt, please contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre via Phonebusters  at 1-888-495-8501

*Update*

A listener called in to say that they’ve had a similar experience but via email. Be on guard.
