City plagued with even further doctor shortages

Quesnel will have four fewer family physicians at some point this year and will potentially lose another three in 2016.

Those numbers have been confirmed by Doctor Ronald Chapman who is the Vice President of Medicine with Northern Health.

Doctor Chapman says that will not only leave some residents without a family doctor but will also mean more work for those who remain behind when on-call at the hospital.

He says Northern Health is working with the community to recruit more doctors however and have actively pursued family practices residents in Prince George.

Doctor Chapman says they may also look at a different model for delivering services in Quesnel because he says a lot of younger physicians want something different than what is traditionally offered…

Doctor Chapman says they plan to have a workshop in Quesnel within the next month or two that would include the public, local physicians and Northern Health.

He says it is important that everyone works together to ensure that they can make Quesnel an attractive prospect for young physicians.
