A Shuswap elder is being recognized for her work in teaching the Secwepemctsin language.
Cecilia DeRose was nominated in the Culture, Heritage and Spirituality category of the Indspire awards which will be given to her in march in Winnipeg.
When she was notified by a phone call that she had won, Derose said she was a little skeptical
“Well this lady phoned me from back east and told me her name and I thought that it was just a prank call so I told her to call me back in a couple of days at 5pm so that way if it wasn’t a prank call she would call me back and she did”.
Derose will be joined by 13 other Indigenous Canadians to officially receive their Indspire award.
