Two-Day Conference Seeks to Break the Silence on Sexual Violence

The Committee for Action Against Sexual Violence is hosting a two-day conference in Williams Lake to break the silence and heal wounds.

Joan Sorley who is with the Committee says things will get started Friday evening with a meet and mingle to find out what is going on in our communities.

“Raising awareness of what the situation is and how widespread sexual violence in our communities is, and then Saturday we’re bringing in some experts to talk to us and to work us through a workshop-what should we be doing about it, how can we do it, and what should our next steps be.”

Day 1 of the event runs Friday, November 3 from 6 pm until 8 pm at Williams Lake TRU campus and will continue Saturday from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm.

Sorley says she believes that most people have no idea how widespread sexual violence is and how many people it affects.

“It’s a very uncomfortable conservation, it’s a difficult conversation. It’s one that really needs to happen-the name of our conference is ‘Breaking the Silence’,” she says.

Cost of the two-day event is $10 and you can register by contacting the Women’s Contact Society at 250-392-4118.
