Cariboo to celebrate International Women’s Day

Celebrations for International Women’s Day will be coming early to the Cariboo with events taking place this evening.

Ashlee Hyde, coordinator for the Women’s Contact Society in Williams Lake, says it is exciting to know that although women were struggling for their right to work, vote, and end gender discrimination a century ago, women now account for almost 38% of self-employed people with approximately 3,900 registered women apprentices in the province.

A special evening to celebrate International Women’s day gets underway at the TRU campus in Williams Lake beginning at 5 pm, with four local women speaking how they make this year’s theme “Make it Happen” every day.

Celebrations in Quesnel are also scheduled with a fundraiser at the Occidental to support the Amata Transition House for women and children who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing abuse.

International Women’s Day takes place on Sunday, March 8th.
