What To Do About GR Baker Hospital ?

GR Baker Hospital in Quesnel remains a minimum of three years away from any expansion.

Mayor Bob Simpson says nothing has changed with the change in the Provincial Government as they continue to work through the issues around a potential expansion of the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit…

“There are geotechnical concerns about that entire bench that need to be resolved and there are also First Nations consultations that have to be undertaken because that whole area is a known mass grave are for the Lhtako-Red Bluff Indian band and it’s also very close to where the Tsilhqot’in Chiefs were buried so there is high sensitivity around first nations.”

GR Baker has the worst facility index rating in the entire province and Simpson says there is no question that a new hospital is needed, but he says that is still likely a minimum of 10 to 15 years away, and he says even that has it’s challenges…

“Unlike other places where they’ve said you you should probably replace the hospital, they can turn around and say that’s the land that we will build it on. In our case we don’t have that land, that kind of size of property available in our downtown core, where we still want to put the hospital.”

Simpson says they continue to try and figure out what the best investment would be and to get it done as quickly as possible.
