Rudy Johnson and his son Randy stopped by Williams Lake City hall Tuesday afternoon gifting the City with a framed picture paying tribute to one of the Cariboo’s heritage sites that is still used today.
Mayor Walt Cobb proudly put up the picture of the Rudy Johnson Bridge this morning at the reception of the Corporate Services Department and Administration.
“As we all know the Rudy Johnson Bridge was a dream of one of our local ranchers and he was told by Highways many years ago that it couldn’t be done, and in Cariboo style he got it done and we have a bridge across the Fraser River,” says Cobb.
Rudy Johnson decided the need to build a bridge when his wife nearly drowned crossing the Fraser River on the Soda Creek Ferry.
He had completed it in 1968 after locating a bridge in Alaska, dismantling it into 3,000 pieces, and paying to have it transported.
