It was a long night for the Quesnel Kangaroos but it was worth it in the end.

The Roos took the opening game of their best of three Central Interior Hockey League final against visiting Terrace on Saturday night at the West Fraser Centre.

It was a marathon affair as it wasn’t decided until 15:03 of double overtime.

Brody Dyck was the hero banging home a rebound on a shot by Chase Astorino.

Alessio Tomasetti opened the scoring on an early power play at 2:02, and Astorino gave Quesnel a 2-0 lead after the opening period.

Terrace scored early in the second but Brody Dale, who had another strong game with a goal and an assist, restored the Roos’ two goal lead and it was 3-1 through 40 minutes.

Colin Bell then scored just over four minutes into the third on a bad change by Quesnel converting a two on none.

The River Kings then tied it up a couple of minutes later while short-handed.

Terrace carried the play for most of the first overtime but the Roos survived thanks to some nice saves by goaltender Alex Wright.

Both he and his counterpart, Daniel Paul, were busy as both made 41 saves.

Quesnel seemed to be revived in the second OT and it eventually paid off.

The series will now shift to Terrace for game two on Saturday (March 21) night.

A third game, if necessary, will be played on Sunday.
