Veteran receives high honour from France

Saturday morning proved to a be a surprise for a Williams Lake resident who received the National Order of the Legion of Honour from France.

Frederic Hjalmarson, a 92-year-old veteran who served in WWII from 1941 to 1945, says he never thought he would receive such a high honor.

Hjalmarson’s family who kept the honor a secret from Frederic presented it to him in a close-knit and low key special gathering.

Frederic’s son David, who is also a veteran and served in Afghanistan, says it meant a lot to him to nominate his dad for the award which is equivalent to the Order of Canada.

Hjalmarson is one of 486 Canadian veterans to receive the award, from the government of France to the mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy.
