Widespread Smoke Across the Cariboo Due to Wildfires

Crews worked well into the night as 138 wildfires across the province Friday were sparked primarily in the central interior including the Cariboo.

Almost 40 fires, which still remain active, were discovered in the Cariboo Fire Centre.

The 3 largest according to the BC Wildfire Service information page Saturday morning are the Gustasfon Fire at 1,800 hectares, a wildfire west of Stone Indian Reserve at 1,400 hectares, and a 1,000 hectare blaze 1km north of Chief William.

In Williams Lake both pumps at Chevron and Petro on Oliver St. have run dry of regular fuel and only have premium available as of 6am today.

“Highway 97 North is open to northbound traffic,” says chair for the Cariboo Regional District, Al Richmond Saturday morning. “Highway 97 South between Williams Lake and 100 Mile House is open to northbound and southbound traffic.”

A provincial state of emergency was declared by the province yesterday.

RCMP arrested a wanted man who was a suspect in a violent break and enter that occurred last week. The man is being held in custody to appear before the court.
