Good News On Cariboo Job Front

The unemployment rate in the Cariboo region was moving in the right direction last month.

Andrew Fields, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, goes over some of the numbers…

“There were 81 thousand people working in June. That’s an increase compared with last June, so there were about 34-hundred more people working which is a growth rate of 4.4 percent so that is a fairly large growth rate, the national average is 1.9 percent.

In terms of the actual unemployment figure, Fields says it went from 7.8 percent last June to 6.9 percent this June.

That is the lowest the rate has been since March.

Fields says most of the employment gains were in one area…

“The services industries as a whole, which includes healthcare and food services, and stuff like that there were arbout 5 thousand more people working in those types of industries.”

Fields says the biggest decline, around 17-hundred jobs, was in natural resources.
