The heat continues as 18 temperature records were broken across the province including the Cariboo Thursday.
Matt MacDonald is a meteorologist with Environment Canada.
“Williams Lake set a new record with a high of 31.1 degrees Celsius and that beat out the old record of 30.0 degrees set back in 1975. It’s going to be just a tad cooler (today). We’re looking at 30 degrees with a little bit of cloud moving into the area, and that forest fire (west of 100 Mile) smoke will help reduce the heating from the sun.”
MacDonald says normals for this time of year are highs of 24, and that they should be reached by Monday.
As for mother nature giving aid to the wildfire near the Gustafson Forest Service which as of 8:30 am July, 7 was estimated at 1,200 hectares there is very little is in the forecast.
“There’s just a pinch of precipitation possible on Sunday evening. We’ll see a trough of low-pressure move across the central interior and we could see maybe a millimeter or two, but not a huge amount of rain by any means.”
MacDonald says winds are also expected to develop this afternoon with gusts up to 40km/h persisting through the evening and dying down towards midnight.
He says Williams Lake only picked up 9mm of rain in June compared to the normal average of 58mm.
