Young Environmentalist Makes Pitch To Quesnel City Council

Some on Quesnel City Council are calling it “the Maya project.”

Maya Knauff, a grade 5 student, is asking the local politicians to consider making Quesnel a plastic free community.

Maya made a presentation at the last Council meeting, one that included some disturbing numbers…

“In 2010, about 2.86 billion plastic bags were thrown away in Canada, 100 billion in the U.S., and close to a trillion world wide.”

Maya says bans are already in place in some areas…

“In countries such as Rwanda, China, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Bali and Macedonia. In Hawaii, stores that don’t comply to policies will get a fine from $100 to $1,000-some exemptions are given. Other places are California and Mexico City. Places considering bans are Victoria, Newfoundland and Labrador, Montreal, Chicago, Austin, Seattle and New York.”

Maya also went over the four steps to making Quesnel a plastic free community.

She says it starts with informing people about single use plastic bag pollution, creating a voluntary program for businesses to join, making a bylaw and then publicizing the new green movement.

Council will now take her request to it’s policy and bylaw committee.

Mayor Bob Simpson also suggested that she take her message to the Province.
